Carmel-by-the-Sea is a quaint European-style village composed of charming

gourmet markets, antique stores, clothing boutiques, wine tasting rooms, specialty shops and many fine dining restaurants. Though it features all of the amenities of a metropolitan area, Carmel retains its unique small town charm, hosting farmer’s markets, parades, craft fairs and cultural events. It is no wonder the city was named one of the “World’s Best Cities for Romance” by Travel + Leisure.

A short walk from downtown is the stunning Carmel Beach, it’s soft white sand and gentle ocean breezes are perfect for strolling or walking the dogs. Bordered by the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links on one end, and the Big Sur Coastline on the other, Carmel Beach is consistently ranked by travel publications as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Carmel is comprised of various micro communities, the most coveted of which are the Golden Rectangle and Carmel Point areas. The Golden Rectangle is perhaps the most desirable and commands the highest price per square foot for its close proximity to the downtown area, its quintessential Carmel cottages, and its architectural marvels. Of the Golden Rectangle, the most prized is the ocean view and oceanfront real estate found on Scenic Drive, and the West side of San Antonio.  Carmel Point is slightly further from town, allowing for larger homes and lot sizes, as well as quieter streets.

The Northeast and Southeast areas offer sylvan charm, while Carmel Woods plays host to some of the more whimsical structures. The Hatton Fields estate area offers properties with much more square footage, privacy and generally heavier construction. Jacks Peak falls into the Carmel zip code but overlooks Monterey Bay and hosts some of the most interesting architectural feats of the last century. Carmel Views and Carmel High Meadows both offer the more affordable view options in the Carmel area, while Carmel Meadows is a well-kept ocean front secret just between Carmel Point and Carmel Highlands.

Carmel has long attracted cultural icons and celebrities, such as famed actress Doris Day, owner of the Cypress Inn and Terry’s Lounge, as well as Clint Eastwood, owner of Mission Ranch Inn and part-owner of the Pebble Beach Company. The town’s illustrious history includes notable figures such as Ansel Adams, Robinson Jeffers and Jack London, all of whom are credited with making Carmel what it is today. •
